Summary/Abstract: Together with the 1940 occupation, the Soviet art theory invaded Estonia as well and became one of the means of subjecting the local art life. By that time, the said theory and its central notion ‘realism’ had gone through quite a diverse development. In the course of the subsequent half century the notion of realism underwent significant metamorphoses. Changes in the meaning and role of the notion of realism are not only connected with developments in art theory, but they reflect major turning-points in Soviet regime – replacement of its youthful seeking with Stalinism and its erosion during the next decades.
