Summary/Abstract: On the basis of hitherto unknown documents kept at the “Ivan Vazov” National Library in Plovdiv is expressed the hypothesis that the South Slav Educational and Charitable Committee founded in Belgrade in 1877 was connected with the resumption of the uprising operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the spring of the same year. Other information is also revealed about the close contacts of Lyuben Karavelov, one of the leaders of the Bulgarian national revolution, and the chief agent of the Slav Charitable Committee at the Civil Administration in the Russian army during the 1877–1878 War, Alexander Narishkin. The dual nature of the South Slav Committee in Belgrade – ostensible educational activity behind which were concealed political objectives is considered as a stage in the realization of a long cherished idea of Lyuben Karavelov, marked by the attempts to set up also other organizations combining educational functions with concrete revolutionary tasks.
