Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to apply the psychoanalytic diagnostic method created by Nancy McWilliams to a fictional character, Róża Żabczyńska, the heroine of the book The Stranger written by Maria Kuncewiczowa. The discussion begins with a general considerations on the tradition of psychological research on literary texts and the application of classical psychoanalytical knowledge to literary studies, followed by the analysis of the possibilities of using literature in psychological practice. The author also mentions the potential of the interaction between the two fields of science: psychology and literature. Subsequently, a case study of the literary heroine Róża Żabczyńska is created using a psychoanalytic diagnostic method. The conclusion of the article indicates the reasonable possibility of using a real psychoanalytic tool to diagnose literary characters.
