Summary/Abstract: The article explores the functioning of the system of higher education in Bukovyna in the late 19th century, which was influenced by historical and political events of the time. It is demonstrated that the change of power and political authorities directly affected the functioning of educational establishments. As the higher educational system is based on some lower stages, the system of elementary and secondary schools in Bukovyna in the 18th through the late 19th centuries was analyzed. The authors studied specific features of education in Chernivtsi gymnasiums, teacher training specialized schools, adult education, and bursa schools. Close attention was devoted to the foundation of Chernivtsi University in 1875, the most significant event in the history of education in Bukovyna. Student standards, principles, and modes of life in the university at the end of the 19th century were viewed in the light of novel The First Dawns by Teodot Galip (1873–1943), a writer and a political/ cultural figure of Bukovyna.
