Summary/Abstract: Slavic patriotism in Czech lands was formed on the basis of the rivalry of French enlightenment and German romanticism. The diffusion of enlightenment and romantic influences enabled Slavic patriotism to play a significant role in the formation of the modern Czech national identity. The example of Josef Dobrovsky shows that in the phase of absence or insufficient tenacity of the national identity building blocks, this diffusion of enlightenment and romantic influences became a support for what had been missing in the national identity – at first the language, then literature, history and finally the state. At the same time, Slavic patriotism in the Czech lands played another significant role from its very beginning – the role of a raised stick. As a romanticized reference to Russia and the Slavic (pan-Slavic) unit within the Habsburg monarchy, the Enlightenment, in Dobrovsky’s concept, became a tool for applying pressure on the Habsburg monarchy so that it would not keep the Czech national identity from its assertion.
