Summary/Abstract: The contribution discusses two major questions of the development of the cluster *kt: under which conditions it merged with the cluster tj, and what the phonetic and phonological details of the change were. While most scholars claim that the change took place before front vowels e, i, this paper reconsiders Hujer’s old suggestion that kt coalesced with tj in all positions. This view can be based on words such as OCS loštika, núštvi or the forms of the supine, and on the vague evidence for the change kt + back vowel > t. The change of kt should be viewed in the context of the development of other similar clusters. The paper discusses usual explanations of the process and tries to find a phonetically and chronologically plausible solution.
