Summary/Abstract: The need to measure and to compare extensions of lengths, distances and areas is as old as the humanity itself. The work deals with particular metrological terms in Slavic languages, especially with names of measures of length and surface area in connection with the evolution of the language system in the history of human society. The names of units of measurement were often connected with the human body (lakútü, palücü, noga). Some names for square measures were developed secondarily from the original measures of liquid capacity, for instance, OCS. korücü. The name was transposed to a field sown with grain of the amount equivalent to one korücü. In addition to the pan-Slavic names of measures there also exist names typical for particular groups of Slavic languages (e.g. East Slavic vürsta). Interesting are connections between names of measures and historical periods in which they were introduced.
