Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to analyze the contents of the journal “Chitalishte” (1870–187(5)). It follows up its establishment as the mouthpiece of the Bulgarian Reading Room in Constantinople in connection with the social and cultural upsurge of the Bulgarian National Revival society during the second half of the 19th century. The objectives, programme and character of the journal “Chitalishte” and the different stages in its development are described in brief. Stress is laid on its considerable contribution to and significance for the Bulgarian cultural and national renascence and, more specifically, for the development of Bulgarian literature and the dissemination of education and culture. Its role as a vehicle for the spreading of the achievements of European science and culture is also emphasized. Attention is paid also to criticism during the National Revival period, including the sharp attacks by representatives of the national revolutionary movement against the journal as a whole or against particular numbers and the reaction of the different boards of the journal to this criticism.
