Summary/Abstract: Seeking to maximize the country’s international position has been the traditional goal of Brazilian foreign policy. The democratic stability that followed the end of the military dictatorship in the mid-1980s and last decade’s far-reaching social and economic change have helped strengthen the international image of Latin America’s largest nation. A further reinforcement of its international status will be contingent on economic development and perseverance in tackling complex social problems. Winning over other international actors to Brazil’s global ambitions will remain a challenge.
