Summary/Abstract: After twelve years of EU-India summits and eight years of strategic partnership, it appears that this partnership exists only in a formal sense. As revealed by an analysis of problems encountered along the way, there are ideological, structural and economic differences between the European Union and India — and these are by no means of minor or temporary nature. Which is not to say that the partnership is doomed to failure. Actually, it may put mutual expectations on a more realistic footing and also inspire the parties into greater commitment to the pursuit of the agreed goals. There is still room for mutual benefits to be derived from closer EU-India cooperation, which may contribute to stability of the entire international system.
