Summary/Abstract: More than 100 highly qualified scholars of three generations work at the Institute of History with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. They all are greatly concerned with some acute problems arising from the sweeping social and political changes that have been brought about of late in Eastern Europe and the world which the Bulgarian historical science faces. The authoritarian regimes and the totalitarian system in Bulgaria established after World War II set limits to the research parametres of the historical science, although they could not substantially change its nature and objectiveness. A lot of historians have some undoubted scientific achievements, especially in the field of fact-finding. The conjuncture-determined political concepts failed to turn into an integral part of the process of acquiring historical knowledge. The methodological monopoly of Marxism curtailed the creative freedom of scholars. The assertion of pluralism in scientific thinking is one of the major future tasks. As values should be reconsidered, the history of the historical science and the broadening of the informational and documentation basis of historical study acquire particular importance. It is necessary to work out a wide-ranging scientific concept of national, European and world history. The elimination of the “zones of silence” in Bulgarian history and focussing attention on a number of unexplored processes, trends, phenomena and events in the national history of the Bulgarians and its organic ties with the European historical process acquires paramount importance. Some changes in the organization of the historical science and in the forms of the international cooperation conducted by the Bulgarian historians are of primary importance for overcoming the provincialism of the historical Science in Bulgaria.
