Summary/Abstract: The 2021 federal election opened a new chapter in the history of Germany: the 16-yearlong rule of the CDU/CSU under Angela Merkel as the chancellor came to an end. The Christian Democrats were replaced by the SPD, which created a new coalition together with the Greens and the liberal FDP. Despite the willingness to renew its foreign policy, the federal government has not cut itself off from Merkel’s decisions and is willing to uphold the anchors of the German global activity. The goal of this article is to present German domestic and foreign policy in the federal election year as well as to describe the first decisions of the new government under SPD.
