Autobiographical text and context

Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the social and individual aspects of autobiography: social coercion and personal construction of a desirable picture of own life. The reconstruction of experience (text) is influenced by power (context). Autobiographies are part of the group practice of remembering and processing the past, they are changed under the pressure of new circumstances. The power prescribes a desirable pattern of personal past. It is pointed out (1) to the critic of ideology that explains the hidden coercion of power with the interests of the ruling groups, and (2) the need of self-reflection that distinguishes the conditions of the experienced from the conditions of the actual memory on the experienced. The criticism of this art helps find oneself in the counter-memory between authenticity, imagination and construction.
