Summary/Abstract: This paper presents a case for the interdisciplinary and speculative study of artificial intelligence (AI) as seen through fictional narratives including and occasionally told by intelligent machines. It argues that fictional narrative might be one of the most effective tools for allowing an AI to learn human values and to align itself to humans. Therefore comprehending imaginatively the technical, theoretical, and phenomenological aspects of the act of AI narration/reading becomes of primary importance. This project promises to bring in dialogue multiple disciplines that rarely work in close contact – such as computer science, philosophy, and literary theory. Its value thus extends not merely to practical gains, but to methodological ones as well. These convergences between disciplines and practices are demonstrated and examined through close readings of a number of texts featuring AI characters and narrators.
