Summary/Abstract: his study, chronologically restricted to the period from the end of the 18th to the early 20th century, elucidates the extensive and difficult question of the traditional folk dwelling in the Central Rhodopes. The traditional architecture of housing is examined, attention being paid to the courtyard; to the principal building materials and the massive and tath-aud-plaster ways of building; to the distribution and the functional purpose of the individual rooms; to the furnishing and the household goods; to the inner and outer architecture of these dwellings. On this basis the traditional folk dwelling in the Central Rhodopes is divided into two basic types: single-asymmetrical and double-symmetrical. The conclusions drawn show that the architectural solution of the Central Rhodope dwelling is in complete harmony with the systems of construction and knowledge of tectonic qualities. They are used in building a strictly individual architectural image. The "Central Rhodope" type of dwelling is one of the types of traditional mountain dwellings and is part of our National Revival period architecture.
