Summary/Abstract: The development of the demographic and the historical-demographic research in Bulgaria during the last decades is determined by some basic factors, among which the publication of a great number of statistical evidences, drawn out from the Ottoman-Turkish documents. The demographic and ethnical history of some inhabited places in the period of the Ottoman rule in the Bulgarian lands is formed in a separate trend of the historical-demographic research. Gabrovo is an inhabited place, settled in such a historical and demographic region and with a kind of geographic position, which play definite role in the development of the historical and demographic processes in it. From the middle of the 15th to the middle of the 16th century, the number of the Bulgarian Christian population in the village continually increases. After that period and infront of all from the beginning of the 17th century this number decreases, to reach an “optimal” level. This is determined by the possibilities of the economic activity for nutrition of the local population from one side, and from the other – by some static and dynamical demographic factors – the reproduction of the population, migration, epidemic, etc. The name tradition, established in the village from the time of the free Bulgarian state, undergoes some changes, but preserves its deep Slav Christian character.
