Summary/Abstract: Henry de Montherlant’s La Rose de sable represents a sharp criticism of colonialism, especially through the identity evolution of the main character, a French lieutenant assigned to Morocco. This paper deals with the language processes reflecting the evolution of his attitude and demonstrating the vision of otherness by other French individuals who are part of the protagonist’s entourage. I will start with an overview of the historical context of the novel and then move on to an analysis of the text. I will also trace the main stages of the evolution of the hero but also the changes in his vision of the Other.
