Summary/Abstract: The two aspects: the martyrdom and preaching in conditions of persecution and the destruction of Church values are highlighted in the topic of persecution of the Сhurch. The story of Vasiliy Akimovich Nikiforov-Volgin «The Road Staff» [Dorozhnyy posokh] is analysed in the context of his early stories. The documentary basis of the story is revealed, the history of the emergence of some images and episodes is reconstructed. The conclusion is made about the change in the writer’s style.
