Summary/Abstract: The paper is a review essay devoted to the three recent biographies of Zygmunt Bauman, written by Dariusz Rosiak, Artur Domosławski and Izabela Wagner. The two former are literary non-fiction books, while the latter is a popular academic work. They all, but especially the Domosławski’s and Wagner’s book, may be considered excellent books and first-rate examples of their respective genres, as well as valuable contributions to the history of Polish sociology. Yet, they also display a certain lack of due critical distance towards the work of Bauman and his activity as a public intellectual. Moreover, they exhibit the problematical features of the genre, especially the inherent tendency to reproduce (or construct) the illusion of individual life as a coherent, linear story. These books’ content provide the author with an opportunity to reflect on the characteristic features of academic writing as a professional skill and a distinctive genre.
