Summary/Abstract: This article examines the connection between shodō calligraphy and Zen Buddhism in Japanese culture. Although both writing, calligraphy and Zen were borrowed from and through Chinese culture, the two were adapted, influencing each other, ultimately reflecting the Japanese mentality. The article examines how Zen wisdom is transmitted through calligraphy and how it impacts the art of writing. To illustrate this phenomenon, two calligraphic works made by the Romanian calligrapher Rodica Frențiu were analysed, following the connection between Zen and shodō. The results show that the principles of Zen can be identified in several aspects of calligraphy: from the way a calligraphic work is created visually, to its content.
