Summary/Abstract: The most powerful economic union today, the European Union, was founded on the basis of the European Coal and Steel Community and the European Economic Community, in 1958, being formed by six states: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and in currently counting 28 member states. Following the Second World War, the expansion of European integration was seen as a variant of the unification of a Europe devastated by extremist nationalism, unification possible through commercial exchanges between large national industries.
