The Identical Other

Summary/Abstract: A considerable part of this writing is devoted to the question of sameness and difference. It is based on the correspondence between Lazar Nikolov and Konstantin Iliev. The 100th anniversary of the former is already a fact and the 100th anniversary of the latter is coming up in 2024. These are not just numbers, but something of an aura, of which Walter Benjamin says that it always represents “a remoteness, however close it might be”. The subject matter of the text is quite broad and not completely focused. It covers the typology of the letters, characterological observations based on it, mythological and etymological excursions, analytical insights and assumptions, oppositions, cursory historical sketches, and memories. The peculiar and not exactly linear structure of the text reflects the author’s desire to indicate some resemblance to the complex (branching apart as well as intersecting) individual compositional forms of both figures. The letters have been considered as independent textual units, but also as dialogical hermeneutic structures.
