Summary/Abstract: The analytical investigation of music composed in the past is one of the most manifest aspects of musicology which enables insight through a variety of methods. However, analysis and music theory have experienced different allocations in the history of music. This article firstly wants to point out different concepts of musicological research and analysis by investigating their historical development. Consequently, the important role of analytical research in contemporary music will be underlined with three examples of compositions from the 20th century. It becomes evident that especially contemporary artworks demand an interdisciplinary-analytical approach because of their striking new characteristics such as electroacoustic music or open forms. Thus, analytical strands are required more than ever in the avant-garde together with an interdisciplinary horizon in musicology.
