Summary/Abstract: So far there are no musicological studies in Bulgarian that discuss the problems of mensural notation. As a whole the music notated with this system falls outside of the musicological interest in the country. An introduction in Bulgarian of the main rules of mensural notation is needed in order to create a wider accessibility to the musical sources notated with this system. Using fundamental musicological studies of the last century, the current article aims to fill this lacuna in the Bulgarian musicological field by presenting the main principles and rules of white mensural notation. The musical examples provided are from the four main manuscripts containing the fifteenth-century English carol repertoire. Definitions and explanations are provided of the note values, ligatures, types of mensurations, main rules of perfection, imperfection and alteration, types of notational dots, as well as coloration.
