Introductory note with the translation of the chapter "Durán or the hybridization of cultures" from the book Conquest of America: the question of the other by Cvetan Todorov

Summary/Abstract: This article consists of the translation of the fourth chapter of Tzvetan Todorov’s book The Conquest of America: The Question of the Other, titled »Duran or the Hybridization of Cultures«, and of an Introductory note to the translation. The author of this article applies Todorov’s theoretical model of analysis of hybridization of cultures on the translated chapter. The theoretical model uses three parameters: axiological, praxeological and epistemological levels, which, when applied to Duran and his chronicles, reveal his ambiguous attitude towards South American Indians and Christianization.
