Summary/Abstract: Vasil D. Stoyanov was an important figure in the history of post-liberation Bulgaria and the preceding National Revival period. This article, however, examines Stoyanov’s views on the geographic and historical region of Macedonia and the city of Thessaloniki. The opening half of the article lays out when and why Stoyanov developed his opinions regarding the importance of the aforementioned regions, as well as the ways in which he stridently asserted their Bulgarian character in his publications and worked to highlight the various external threats he perceived to their territorial integrity. The latter half of the article explores Stoyanov’s proposition for the city of Thessaloniki to become the capital of the future unified Bulgarian state (something he was particularly emphatic about), including his arguments about the city’s economic and strategic importance, as well as its significance to Bulgarian history and culture.
