Factors of Training Practice in Social Community Work: Assessment of Practice Tasks

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the research is to identify the factors which enable or impede students to perform tasks in the practice of social community work. 72 competence portfolios of 4th-year continuing studies students at Mykolas Romeris University, who had performed social community work practice, were analysed in the research. The object of the research was the factors that influence the performance of the tasks of the training practice in social community work. In the first part of the paper the subject “Social Work Practice of the MRU social work study program” is presented. In the second part of the paper, the tasks orientated towards activities in the community implemented by the students (community analysis, assessment of community needs, a community-designated event) and the factors that influenced their performance are introduced. The third part of the paper presents tasks directed towards organisation of training (competences portfolio, weekly activity plans, weekly activity reports and reflections). The research method is qualitative analysis of the content. The research has established that the tasks which relate to specific activities in the community (community analysis, assessment of community needs, a community event) gives sense to the activity, provide the possibility to know the factual object of social work. The research has established that the tasks which relate to presentation for assessment of the activity in the community (competences portfolio, weekly activity plans and reports, practice journal) help students to focus on the result, develops skills of critical and reflexive thinking, encourages them to analyse the process of learning.
