Summary/Abstract: The publication pays tribute to Mátyás Gyóni (1913–1955), the most important representative of the second generation of Byzantine studies in Hungary. We publish three previously unpublished personal letters. The date of their writing, the first half of 1949, makes the letters special, as the communist one-party dictatorship (established in 1948) carried out the so-called “socialist transformation” of Hungarian scientific life this year. The introductory and the comments on the publication provide guidance on the political and personal relations and moments of these tense historical period.
