Summary/Abstract: This study is intended as a memorial to three outstanding researchers who focused on theBulgarian horticulturalists of Hungary, Lilia Peneva-Vincze, Penka Csangova, and AlexanderGjurov, all deceased. The outlooks and investigation methods of the three scientists differedfrom one another. Peneva-Vincze focused on ethnography (such as the culture of cuisine),Csangova looked at oral history and personal destinies, and Gjurov used history anddemography to study the community of Bulgarian horticulturalists in Hungary. Common toall three was the enthusiasm with which they conducted their research and the love andpassion with which they approached their “subjects,” the Bulgarian horticulturalists ofHungary. This study analyzes their most important findings, from the initial settlement of thehorticulturalists in Hungary to the establishment of the socialist cooperative farms, pointingout contradictions and common features. Its objective is to offer a nuanced image of thehistory of the Bulgarian community in Hungary, and to point towards possible directions forfuture research.
