Summary/Abstract: In this paper I apply the theory of Lexical Concepts and Cognitive Models (LCCM) to reveal the “protean nature” of the meaning of Bulgarian prepositions and to show how this approach can help the Bulgarian EFL (English as a foreign language) learners. I argue that Bulgarian spatial prepositions, the preposition do in particular, exhibit flexible meanings, highly dependent on and modified by the word-classes it collocates with. To and do are similar in being associated with orientation and goal, but not path. The research is usage-based, meaning is seen as arising from language use. It will be shown that LCCM theory contributes to reducing the number of senses of a spatial particle by constructing the semantic content conveyed by context elements into lexical concepts which give access to cognitive models.
