Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the etymology of the word pawian ‘baboon’. The author agrees that this word comes indirectly from the Old French babouin ‘baboon’ (Old French babouin > Middle Dutch baubijn > Dutch baviaan > German bavian > pavian > Polish pawian), but he tries to find its origins outside Europe. In this connection he pays attention to some West Chadic forms, i.e. pre-West Chadic *gwagu- ‘baboon, monkey’, Hausa gōgo ‘baboon’, Sha gugwa ‘monkey’, Kulere guga ‘monkey’.
