Summary/Abstract: Starting from metaphysical possibility of an encounter between two men who had never met each other, the author of the paper compares the biographies of two Serbian intellectuals and authors in order to find a line of continuity/discontinuity of ideas and ideologies in Serbian politics and culture of 19th and 20th century. Having found parallels in their characters, as well as in their political engagement, in different epochs respectively, the author claims the leftist nature of their ideas and points to their readiness to fight for ideals of equality and justice, but denies anti-dynastic and revolutionary goals. Caring above all for national interests, both Miloš Crnjanski and his father-in-low Dobra Ružić, each in their own lifetime, were finding the middle ground with two monarchist regimes, being thoughtful about surviving and progress of Serbian nation in the Kingdom of Serbia, that is Yugoslavia. Hence, the national interests in both cases were placed far above ideology.
