Summary/Abstract: Mechanisms of alegorization in the novel The mouth full of dirt by Branimir Šćepanović are observed as the equivalents to the mechanisms of the unconscious since allegory is unconsciously realized within the crack in language resulting in the aporia of connotative and denotative meaning at the level of the narrative whole. The analysis 277 of the chronotopes marked by the opposition nature : culture, i.e. the psychoanalytic concepts of tyhé : automaton, has confirmed this allegoric direction of Šćepanović’s romanesque word in the direction of the (impossible) revelation of the Real text. The mirror structure of the novel indicates that the Real is a cutting: the untellable, from the other side of the connotative and denotative, embodied in the figure of the persecuted. The characters of the persecutor are, on the other hand, seen as creators of meaning: those who accomplish the basic summary formula of the novel (phenomenon → riddle → interpretation). The revelation of the function of the gaze in The mouth full of dirt has led to the conclusion of the dark yard dynamics of narration and the anamorphic status of an allegory, which despite the dominance of the interpretation in the antagonism the persecutor : the persecuted, indicates the domains beyond the symbolic as Šćepanović’s main narrative preoccupation
