The Qur’an is Revealed in Seven Ahruf

Summary/Abstract: In this article we deal with the phenomenon of the revelation of the Qur’an in seven ahruf (seven different styles or forms of reading). There is a large number of the Hadith speaking on this topic and those supplement and explain one another. However, the essence of all those Hadith is the same: the Qur’an was revealed in seven ahruf! We were, here, especially interested to show differences in the topics in Hadith regarding the subject as related to different persons listed in sanad (transmitters) of those Hadith. Muslim scholars also differ in the hermeneutics of the Hadith relating to the topic of seven ahruf, but the ultimate meaning of these Hadith remains a lasting mystery that should remain a source of essential messages and teachings of the faith.
