Summary/Abstract: In spite of the economic crisis, youth unemployment in Germany, already very low before 2008, continued to decline, in contrast to what happened in most other European countries. The German dual system of vocational training is considered to be the key factor of this success. It enables companies to train young people in more than 300 nationally recognized professions, allowing them to access the labour market without loss of time. More than half of every year-group enters dual training. For all its qualities, the dual system is at risk, not only because the number of its participants, young people and companies alike, is in decline, but also because the labour market increasingly requires university degrees. Germany is currently helping foreign countries initiate their own dual system of vocational training while, at the same time, trying to recruit young foreign professionals to Germany in order to make up for a growing labour shortage.
