Summary/Abstract: My hypothesis is that due to the shared Viennese cultural-historical precedents, the trends of characterisation in Csongor and Tünde are akin to the techniques used in Hungarian popular theatre, especially when it comes to the depiction of the villains. The farcical style occasionally surfacing in the dramaturgy of Csongor and Tünde, and the satirical depiction of human fallibility may serve as the link that allows us to compare Vörösmarty’s philosophical fairy tale play with the genre of popular theatre emerging and gaining an audience in Hungary. In order to prove these similarities, I will compare the villains in two of Ede Tóth’s plays, The Village Rogue and The Undesirable with Mirígy from Mihály Vörösmarty’s philosophical fairy tale play.
