Summary/Abstract: In the light of the cultural changes that the 19th century had brought to the Romanian literary space, N.D. Popescu’s hajduk novels seem to be a harmonious mixture of different subgenres as historical, social, and moral novels. Therefore, by processing the historical document and the literary techniques specific to the Romantic movement, N.D. Popescu succeeds in emulating the local imaginary of the heroic figure of the hajduk. Also, the literary formula prevailed by N.D. Popescu had adapted the already used blueprint of the popular novel (dramatic dialogue, sensational plot). In this manner, the historical documents seem to be an artistic pretext for the hajduk rebellion.
