Summary/Abstract: This overlong paper derives from one originally given at a conference to celebrate the life and work of Professor Ivo Banac in Dubrovnik in 2017 on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. In many ways it was written for the one person who can no longer read it. This does not excuse its length, oddities, and non-sequiturs but may in part explain them.
