Summary/Abstract: In July 1931, Aurél Stein had to be interrupted his expedition to Central Asia, as the Hungarian newspapers informed the readers. But that news did not hit him unexpectedly, because he was ready to do alternative research traveling to Persia. On this expedition, he took Charles Louis Fábri as his assistant. This was the first and only occasion when Aurél Stein had a European companion. Fábri had got in touch with Aurél Stein in 1923 when he asked for Stein’s advice in connection with his studies. Stein recommended the Kern Institute in Leiden to Fábri, where he continued his work under the supervision of Professor Vogel, he took part in the edition of the Annual Bibliography of Indian Archaeology. In his letter to Stein, Fábri also mentioned Gyula Németh as his mentor in Budapest. Stein and Fábri left for Iranian Baluchistan through Makran in November 1931. Returning from their four months expedition, Fábri worked with Fred H. Andrews on the material collected under the excavations in the British Museum for five months, then he returned to Leiden. In 1933 he lectured on the Indus-valley civilization at the Kőrösi Csoma Society in Budapest. In the following year, Aurél Stein accepted the invitation of the Hungarian Academy and delivered a lecture on his Persian expeditions, mentioning Fábri’s name as his excellent assistant on his first trip to Iran. In 1936 Fábri moved to India, because his employment at the Kern Institute was ceased, and Gyula Németh could not help him to get a position at the University of Budapest. He began to work on the excavation in the Indus-valley with the help of Stein. Even though they had not common expedition anymore, they kept in touch.
