Summary/Abstract: The article summarizes the papal teaching on St. Joseph by Pius IX. until Pius XII. together. It thus covers the period between the First and Second Vatican Councils. On December 8, 1870, the Patron of the Universal Church was proclaimed as the inspiration for a systematic reflection on the person and life of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The period between the Vatican Councils is referred to as the golden age of Josephology. A major foundation of the devotion to Saint Joseph, which was emphasized at this time, was the fact that he was, according to God's will, the bridegroom of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus Christ.
