Summary/Abstract: The article refers to both religious and political doctrine of Nichiren. Since ‘Nichirenism’ has been divided into many different sects, the article relies mainly on the crucial writings of Nichiren in order to underline ‘pure’ Nichiren’s thought, which seems to be more sophisticated and sublime than its various interpretations. The introduction of the article describes the general Zeitgeist of the Kamakura period in Japan. The first part of the article focuses on the religious doctrine in accordance with Nichiren’s own explanations. The next one shows the relation between Nichiren and other important Japanese Buddhist sects of the period. The fourth part emphasizes the complexity of political connotations regarding the Nichirenian religious doctrine and its significance at the theoretical level in connection to political practices of the Japanese power elites at the time.
