Summary/Abstract: In this paper is compared the presentation of a winter in Andrić’s novel “Omerpaša Latas” and Pasternak’s novel “Doctor Zhivago”. While Andrić wrote about the winter in only one chapter, “February in Sarajevo”, Pasternak devoted much more space to winter and the image of winter extends throughout the novel-epic and in the poems of the main character, Yury Zhivago, which Pasternak added at the end of his novel. In Andrić’s novel, winter is a negative climatic phenomenon and inhabitants of Sarajevo have a hard time living when they do not have firewood and feel constrained. In Pasternak’s novel, winter is more important than in Andrić’s novel. The blizzard has negative connotations and reminds the main character of his mother’s funeral. The blizzard symbolizes both social change and changes in human consciousness. That impact is basically devastating. And in Pasternak, winter changes the lives of his heroes. It is connected, as in Andrić’s novel, with poverty and hunger. On the other hand, Pasternak’s description of winter is more poetic than in Andrić’s novel. This is the first time that a picture of winter has been written in Andrić’s novel “Omerpaša Latas”, while many researchers, mostly Russian, have written about the same motif in Pasternak’s “Doctor Zhivago”.
