Summary/Abstract: The transition from the 19th to the 20th century brought many turning points in Croatian literature, and he also presented the great poet - Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević, who deals with important existential issues and presented them in his own way. Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević proved to be a pessimistic poet in whose poems three central points can be found: homeland, man and universe (Jelčić, 2004: 164). Reading his collections, it is evident that he did not separate himself from himself, but over time developed and matured into an even better and more successful poet. What is even more important for Kranjčević is that he took over the suffering and problems of the collective, presented them as his own riots and troubles and tried to find solutions and a positive outcome. He was a great advocate of freedom, justice, which is evident in his songs. He was also prone to many doubts about the discrepancy between biblical idyll and real life, which is why he offers the image of a "stumbled man" in his poems. as a resurrected person and as a person who has experienced a lot of suffering in his short life (Bagarić, 2005: 69). Although at the beginning of his career he was exposed to negative criticism, both the Church and literary critics, he received full recognition as a poet after World War II, and today is considered the greatest poet of the 19th century, a forerunner of modernity, a synthesis or bridge connecting realism and modernity a classic, the creator of the foundations of contemporary Croatian poetry (Jelčić, 2013). In addition to broadening the horizons of literature, he also expanded the views of destiny and views in spirituality (Šimundža, 1988: 342). He left an influence on many modernist authors, among whom stand out Tin Ujević and Miroslav Krleža, who describes Kranjčević as a "flag bearer of freedom" because "through his prophetic vision he wrote about the relationship between the individual and his homeland." The late 19th and early 20th centuries brought changes in religious views in art. The traditional view of accepting God continues, but there are also some doubts about man's position towards God, the relationship of the biblical account of life to reality. Although literary history and criticism primarily consider him a poet of realism, Kranjčević is considered a forerunner of a new literary period - modernity. With his pessimistic worldview, he provides a different view of the relationship between man and God within which man is perceived as a "stumbled man."
