Summary/Abstract: Modern pedagogical thinking emphasizes the importance and the role of teacher’s competencies in the realization of complex educational objectives, first and foremost in encouragement and development of a student’s versatile personality. This paper approaches the importance of teacher’s emotional competence. There are numerous features of a teacher’s emotional competence, and some of them are related to teacher’s ability of expressing and naming emotions, the ability of observing and understanding emotions, as the ability of leadership and emotion regulation. Some of the benefits of an emotionally competent teacher listed in pedagogical literature are: Emotionally competent teachers manage to control their behaviour, even they are emotionally excited in challenging situations; they regulate their emotions in a healthy manner; they manage positive outcomes in the classroom without endangering their health; emotionally competent teachers possess high self- awareness; they show more effective class management strategies; they are more active and able to use their competencies to promote enthusiasm and enjoyment on learning, as in teacher leadership and student behaviour management.
