Summary/Abstract: In his book “The man who wanted to be a prince” (“Człowiek, który chciał być księciem”, 2008), Samuel Blumenfeld uncovers hitherto unknown facts about the life and work of Michał Waszyński, a film director, who in the period preceding the Second World War made forty box office hits. Blumenfeld concentrates on pre-war, Italian-Spanish period in Waszyński’s life. With inquisitiveness worthy of a private detective, he reconstructs successive stages of his life (e.g his time in gen. Anders’ Army, the “metamorphosis” into a prince) and career (collaboration with William Wyler, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Orson Welles; the creation, together with Samuel Bronstone, of a film empire in Spain). Blumenfeld reveals the carefully planned masquerade of Waszyński’s life, and clears up the gossip, often created by Waszyński himself.
