Summary/Abstract: In the 19th century – a complex period, with a lot of political events and cultural currents (the neoclassical and romantic being the most important) – townscapes became different from those made in the 15th to the 18th century. Most of them are only partial images of towns, representing monuments of political, social or cultural importance, but also anonym corners of the city. Another new element that occurs in the 19th century is the popular character of art, which is now available for many viewers, being a time when many lesser-gifted painters became famous. Moldavia, Valachia and Transylvania are now visited by English, French or German artist-travelers, who made during their trips a lot of drawings which later where published in historical or travel-memorial books.
