Summary/Abstract: The town of Targovishte has a rich and long history. It was found as a village in the big Shumen kaza in the first half of XVI century under the name Eski Dzhuma, The Dzhuma marketplace, or just Dzhuma. Within a short time it became an independent kaza with its own villages. The borders of the kaza kept changing over the centuries. In the XIX century it had 33 villages. Its location on a crossroad helped the growth of the trade in the region. The well-known annual fair contributed to the development of different handicrafts. Gradually the town turned into a center of the trade in the Danube vilaet. The second largest fair in the European part of the Ottoman Empire after the Uzundzhov was held here. The purpose of this research is to follow the esnaf class in the town of Eski Dzhuma by districts. The information is based on Ottoman archive documents, research, and publications by different historicians.
