Summary/Abstract: This article traces the role of the city of Shumen and its region in the political life of Bulgaria from the Liberation (1878) to the rule of St. Stambolov (1887). The analysis is based on information about the formation of regional political forces and their influence on public life. In addition, the influence of the central government on the political views of the people of Shumen and the administrative status of the city are discussed. The article also focuses on the importance of the army and the political press in the formation of public attitudes.
