Summary/Abstract: Mihai Cimpoi’s book, CRITICE. Prăpastia lui Pascal (CRITIQUES. Pascal’s Abyss), published by the Scrisul Românesc (Romanian Writing) Foundation, Craiova 2009, is structured onto three parts: I. Nietzsche and us, the postmodern people; II. Re-reading the classics: Grigore ALEXANDRESCU; III. Trajectories. Through his literary and philosophical essays, the author is preoccupied by “the permanent recreation of values ensuring the vitality of culture”. In his “Argument”, the author confirms that “we are constantly terrorized, in this fortunate/unfortunate time of history, by the mirage of Pascal’s Abyss. “During a trip, the horses carrying the philosopher of the ‘thinking rod’ shied, at a certain moment, and started to run insanely, so that they could have cast him into an abyss. The obsession of that possible existential abyss remained with him throughout his entire life!” This fear returns today – the author argues – in the tense disputes between I and the Other, between identity and alterity, between One and More, which is why the imperatives of Europeanization, globalization have stimulated theoretical debates on identity.
