Summary/Abstract: The goal of this paper is to examine the role played by regional or minority languages in the construction of a new European identity. The paper starts with an analysis of the reasons that European identity has become such an important issue in the European Union and explores the problems related to the construction of this identity and the solutions adopted. Subsequently, the paper offers an overview of the ways in which regional or minority languages are acknowledged – and lack acknowledgement – in EU law and analyses the interpretation of EU law related to regional or minority languages provided by the European Commission. The emphasis is on EU law rather than on other Europe-wide initiatives such as those coordinated by the Council of Europe.
